⚕️ Veterinary advice from NeorniVet
Watery droppings and soft droppings are among the most common concerns reported by bird owners.
In many cases, this is temporary and harmless, but it can sometimes indicate an intestinal imbalance or an underlying condition.
1. What are normal bird droppings?
Bird droppings consist of two parts:
- Solid part: the brownish to greenish portion
- Urine: consisting of white to cream-coloured urate crystals (salts of uric acid) and a liquid component (often clear and colourless)
Mild variations are normal and can be influenced by various factors.
Droppings are considered soft or watery when they become persistently loose, watery, or lose their normal shape.
⚕️ What does the veterinarian say?
In practice, we often see owners becoming concerned quickly when droppings change. Small fluctuations are normal and not always a reason for concern.
Are watery droppings the same as diarrhea?
Not always. Soft droppings may occur temporarily, for example:
- after a dietary change
- due to stress
- in warm weather
- during breeding
- depending on the time of day
True diarrhea is usually more persistent and more often accompanied by reduced appetite or general weakness.
2. Possible causes of watery or soft droppings
Cause 1: Diet or sudden dietary changes
New feed, additional fruit, or a sudden change in diet composition can temporarily affect intestinal function and lead to soft or watery droppings.
⚕️ What does the veterinarian say?
During dietary transitions, supporting the intestinal flora can help restore balance more quickly. For this purpose, we use supportive supplements such as Probi-Plus and Dysbac Liquid.
Cause 2: Stress and environmental changes
Birds respond strongly to changes such as:
- transport
- pairing during breeding
- relocation to another cage or aviary
- changes in group composition
⚕️ What does the veterinarian say?
In practice, we regularly observe that watery droppings often normalise spontaneously once birds regain calm and their natural balance is restored.
Cause 3: Disturbed intestinal flora
An imbalance of the intestinal flora often occurs:
- after illness or medication
- in young birds
- during intensive or stressful periods such as breeding or moulting
A healthy intestinal flora is essential for digestion and overall condition.
Cause 4: Infections or parasites
Watery droppings may sometimes signal an underlying condition such as worms, coccidiosis, salmonellosis, giardiasis, hexamitiasis, …
Pay particular attention if you notice:
- reduced appetite
- weight loss
- lethargy
- a marked change in colour or smell
In such cases, examination by one of our NeorniVet veterinarians is recommended.
3. When should you contact a veterinarian?
Nutritional support helps maintain the natural balance but does not replace diagnosis or treatment.
If soft or watery droppings persist, veterinary consultation is always advised.
Contact us when:
- watery droppings last for several days
- your bird becomes less active
- weight loss occurs
- multiple birds show symptoms simultaneously
⚠️ Birds often hide illness for a long time, which makes early monitoring essential.
