Snot

"Snot" is the umbrella term keepers use for an infection of the upper respiratory tract in chickens. You can recognise it by sneezing, a runny nose, a swollen side of the head or eyes, dirty feathers around the nostrils and sometimes a typical smell. The cause is usually bacterial (such as infectious coryza), a mycoplasma infection or a virus, often following stress, poor ventilation or the purchase of new birds.

Does my chicken have snot or just a cold?

That is not a distinction you can make by sight. Snot calls for a proper diagnosis, because the underlying pathogen determines the approach. Many forms, such as coryza and mycoplasma, require treatment with prescription medicines from your veterinarian. Do not wait too long with this: an untreated respiratory infection spreads quickly within a flock.

Why our veterinarians recommend Respicor

Alongside veterinary treatment, you can support the airways nutritionally. Respicor combines vitamins A and C with herbs such as thyme, eucalyptus, oregano and echinacea. It supports the airways and is also used during heat stress. A common practice is a 10 to 14-day course when buying new birds, as support during a sensitive period.

Important: Respicor is not a replacement for a veterinary medicine or a diagnosis. It is a supplement that has its place alongside your veterinarian's care. Any medicines are available only on prescription from a veterinarian and not through this webshop.
