Wry neck - Stargazing
With wry neck, also called "stargazing", your chicken turns or tilts its head, looks upward or backward, loses its balance or falls over. It is not a disease in itself, but a nervous symptom with a variety of causes.
What can cause wry neck in a chicken?
The causes vary widely. Sometimes it is a nutritional deficiency, for example of vitamin E, selenium or vitamin B1. But wry neck can also point to a serious infection or condition, such as Newcastle disease, Marek's disease, an ear infection or a head injury. Newcastle disease is moreover a notifiable disease.
The veterinarian first, always
Because wry neck can be a sign of serious and even notifiable disease, a diagnosis by your veterinarian is always the first step. Do not put this off. Only once the cause is known do you know whether nutrition plays a role and whether support makes sense.
Why our veterinarians recommend Vit E + Se
When a deficiency of vitamin E or selenium plays a part, Vit E + Se can support the nerve and muscle function nutritionally. It contains vitamin E in a well-absorbable form, selenium, linseed oil and zinc.
