The feather consists mainly of keratin, a protein that derives its strength from sulphur bridges between cysteine. The pigeon produces that cysteine itself from methionine, an amino acid it must obtain entirely from its feed. The need for it peaks during the moult, and classic grain and legume mixtures are naturally limited in it. If the supply via the feed does not keep up with that peak, the pigeon takes the difference from itself.

The moult itself is driven by day length and hormonal balance. Nutrition does not determine when the moult begins, but it does determine how the feather that is then formed grows out.

This combination is geared to exactly that, as a supplement to a good base feed: amino acids via the drinking water, fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins via the feed, and a premix that covers the broader nutrient profile.
