Wisbroek Parrot High Fat Handfeeding is specially developed for hand-feeding young parrots that require a high-fat diet. It can also be used as force-feeding for sick or lagging young birds.
How does it work?
Hand-rearing may be necessary when a parent bird dies, when the parents refuse to feed, or when, in a large clutch, the youngest chicks do not receive enough food from the parents.
Wisbroek Parrot High Fat Handfeeding is a natural, energy-rich rearing food, developed on a scientific basis for young parrots. The composition contains certified blood plasma that contributes to the build-up of muscle tissue. Vitamin A and the natural vitamins K1 and K2 support a healthy bone matrix and an optimal bone structure, thus contributing to the growth and development of the chick. The added probiotic supports resistance. The food is easily digestible and has an extra fine texture, making it suitable for administration via a crop needle (0.8 mm).
Directions for use
What do you need?
- Wisbroek Parrot High Fat Handfeeding
- A small syringe
- A crop needle or feeding spoon
- A bowl to prepare the food in
- A sturdy container to place the chick in during feeding
Preparation
Use boiled water cooled to 35 °C. At this temperature, the enzymes present work optimally and the food acquires the correct texture.
Add 1 part Parrot High Fat Handfeeding to 1 part water (maximum 3 parts water). Stir until the powder has dissolved, leave to stand for 5 to 10 minutes and stir again until a smooth paste forms. Allow the paste to thicken well so that the texture passes through the feeding needle.
Feeding the chick
Draw the paste up with a syringe and remove the air. Place the chick in a small, sturdy container (for example a cut-off plastic bottle with kitchen paper on the bottom) so that it feels as if it is in a nest situation. Tap gently on the edge of the nest: the chick will normally gape. Then feed with the feeding syringe or feeding spoon.
Storage
Once prepared, it can be kept for a maximum of 8 hours at room temperature, out of the sun. Do not store in the refrigerator: this is too cold for the chick and reduces the effect of the food.
Hygiene
Wash your hands thoroughly before use and use clean materials. After use, clean all materials thoroughly. Hygiene is vital in the hand-rearing of young birds.
Droppings
After each feeding, check whether there are droppings in the nest and remove them. A healthy chick produces a dropping after each feeding in a membrane that can be removed whole with tweezers.
Who is it suitable for?
Wisbroek Parrot High Fat Handfeeding is suitable for young parrots such as Psittacus, Ara (except Ara chloroptera and Ara ambiguus), Poicephalus and Pionites melanocephalus.
Wisbroek offers two hand-rearing foods for parrots. Choose High Fat when the species naturally has a fat-rich diet. For chicks that need a lower-fat diet with extra protein, Parrot High Protein Handfeeding is the appropriate choice. If you are unsure which variant suits your species, please contact our avian veterinarians.
